Playing with Fire

Take two families and friends,

Add in a few egg whisks. each attached to about a  metre of strong ripcord line,

A good supply of fine grade steel wool,

Set up on a river, one camera out in the river and one camera on the beach, each with a synchronised remote trigger

Light the wool and spin the whisk around

- and here’s what you get …

And then I let everyone else have a turn …

As you can see there are two photos in each frame.  Each of these were taken at the same time, using two
different cameras, triggered at the same time.

One camera, a Nikon D200, was set up with an Nikon 18-200 VR2 lens, positioned squarely in front of
the spinner, and about 50 metres away.

The second camera, a Nikon D300s with a Sigma 10-20mm Ultra Wide Angle lens, was tripod mounted and
positioned in the river, very roughly 90 degrees offest from the first camera and at a  similar distance. The
river being at low tide helped, as I was able to get the camera WAY out into the river, ensuring a load of water
between the camera and the subject, and those wonderful reflections are the result.

Triggering was courtesy of a set of Yongnuo RF-603N remote triggers – one on each camera and
one in my hand down on the beach as the primary trigger.  A lot of people don’t like these triggers,
but when you take into consideration the price and how robust they are you really can’t beat them.

Each camera was set to ISO 500, F8, 15s shutter, manually focussed at infinity. auto white balance.

We even tried some doubles …

… and Tamara did a Figure-8 too!
